Launch Day 🚀

From the Author

Well, today's the day that I flip the switch on this site. To those of you coming here for the first time, welcome! Design Dots aims to be a simple, curated list of design-related links to explore each day (except maybe for Sundays, because football). If you want to read a little more about the intentions of the site, check out the About page. In the meantime, enjoy today's dots.

Official Launch Coming Up

From the Author

I'm planning on officially launching Design Dots on Monday (Nov 19, 2018). I'm a little anxious ... scratch that. I'm extremely anxious about sharing it with the design community. I'm hoping that it will be well received and folks continue to come back each day. I've found a bit of validation of this idea with design news boards becoming more frustrating to browse each day with their spam and lack of curation. Twitter continues to be a good source of inspiration and news, even though it can get noxiously political at times. That's been one of my principles of success for this site (and Thanksgiving dinners): don't talk about politics or religion.

Anyway, who else is playing Red Dead Redemption 2?

State of Design Tools 2018

From the Author

Today the new 1.0 version of InVision Studio came out to add to the ever-expanding list of design tools. This update seems like a good step in the right direction. Though, personally, I'm always eager to see which tool is going to solve the problem of dynamic constraints and basic web technologies. As a product designer for a web-based product, I'm always frustrated by the manual actions needed when mocking up my designs. Some newer tools like Supernova Studio and Bondlayer are making some ripples, but they're not quite there yet. I really think that the first visual design tool to solve for basic things like dynamic constraints, margin, and padding (without requiring a plugin), will be the one to own the industry. I really think we're on the cusp. I'm excited to see what's next!

Webflow mastery

From the Author

I picked up Ran Segall's extra credit course on advanced webflow techniques. I'm excited to get into it and start polishing some of my webflow skills. If you have seen his master class or his Youtube channel, Flux, you should check them both out.
